Officer Clearman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while conducting a traffic stop on I-880, near the 66th Avenue on-ramp, in Oakland.
Officer Clearman suffered severe injuries when he was struck by the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The driver of the vehicle who struck him fled the scene. A second car, also believed to be involved in the incident, also fled.
Officer Clearman was a US Marine Corps veteran of the War on Terrorism, where he served as a sniper. He had served with the California Highway Patrol for 16 months. He is survived by his wife.

Officer Wertz was shot and killed at approximately 2:00 am after he and his partner responded to a fight at a local convenience store at the intersection of 8th Street and Walnut Street.
Officer Wertz and his partner were working a plainclothes regional auto theft detail when the call was broadcast and responded to the scene. When they arrived at the location, they heard several shots in the parking lot and saw a man leaving the lot.
As the officers approached the man he began to flee on foot. As Officer Wertz caught the suspect the man suddenly fired two shots, fatally striking him in the chest. Officer Wertz's partner immediately tackled the suspect and took him into custody.
Officer Wertz had served with the agency for 9 years. He had previously worked as a prison guard and part time as an officer for the Sinking Spring and South Heidelberg Township Police Departments. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Officer Peter Faatz succumbed to injuries he received when his patrol car collided with an ambulance at the intersection of Hank Aaron Drive and Milton Avenue, near Turner Field, as both vehicles were responding to a shooting call.
Both vehicles had their sirens and lights activated when they collided at the intersection. Officer Faatz was the only person in the squad car. The occupants of the ambulance were not critically injured.
Officer Faatz had served with the agency for 16 months.

Deputy Callin succumbed to injuries inflicted the previous day when he was intentionally struck by the driver of a vehicle while operating a radar.
Deputy Callin was standing under an overpass when he attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. The driver of the vehicle intentionally sped up and struck Deputy Callin and then fled the scene. Deputy Callin was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The driver of the vehicle, who had been cited 14 times in the previous 2 years for driving with a suspended license, was located and arrested early the following morning.
Deputy Callin had served with the Orange County Sheriff's Office for 4 years. He is survived by his wife, parents, and sister. His father also serves with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and his sister was in the academy at the time of his death.

Officer Nick Birco was killed when his patrol car was struck by a van being pursued by officers at the intersection of Cambridge and Felton Streets.
The persons in the van had been involved in an earlier robbery of an individual. The victim had accompanied officers during a search of the van and located it a short distance away. As the officers approached it, the van sped away.
The officers pursued the van until it struck the rear quarter-panel of Officer Birco's patrol car, causing it spin around and strike a utility pole. The van then struck two buildings and crashed. Officer Birco had aborted an attempt to lay down spike strips at the intersection and was moving his patrol car when it was struck.
All four persons were taken into custody. The three occupants of the van were charged with murder, manslaughter, and other charges.
Officer Birco was transported to San Francisco General Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Officer Birco was a US Marine Corps veteran and had served with the San Francisco Police Department for 5 years. He was survived by his parents, two sisters, brother-in-law, niece, and two nephews.
